Backstory
As the product of a German mother and American father in the US Army, I moved frequently and spent my early years in Cold-War Berlin. Being immersed in a city divided by global powers gave me an early appreciation for cultures and languages. I broke a six-generation family tradition of military service to pursue a career on Wall Street. After graduating from the University of Virginia, I joined Morgan Stanley in M&A in New York. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, I had the chance to return to Germany with Morgan Stanley—launching a global career that combined language skills, cultural curiosity, and a strong work ethic.
What’s a book, podcast, or movie that’s had a big impact on you - and why?
The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown, recounts how the University of Washington rowing team defied the odds to win gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the story highlights perseverance, grit, and the transformative power of teamwork. I found the book deeply moving and hopeful—an inspiring reminder that even the most improbable underdogs can triumph.
About Katherine
After Harvard Business School, where I was in the same section as Yumiko, I joined Goldman Sachs, working in Frankfurt and New York. I led European Institutional Equities Sales in the US, working closely with Yumiko and Lisa. I then transitioned to hedge fund capital raising, before joining the World Economic Forum to lead infrastructure initiatives globally. I now serve on the board of Select Medical (NYSE: SEM) and the advisory board of CS Venture Opportunities Fund. Through Extraordinary Women on Boards, I’ve deepened my governance knowledge and am honored to join MPower Partners GP II Limited alongside such remarkable founders and board members.
