Backstory
I grew up surrounded by nature in a rural town in Ibaraki Prefecture. I remember being curious about the world beyond Japan from a young age. When I asked my parents to let me study abroad instead of wearing a traditional kimono for my coming-of-age ceremony, I think I may have disappointed them a little - but that experience became the first step in helping me break out of my shell. After graduating from university in Canada, I worked as a lab technician at a local medical school. Immersed in a diverse environment, I learned that communication is about more than just technical language skills - it’s about knowing how to express yourself clearly and to truly listen. I also came to understand the importance of having a global perspective. At MPower, where diversity is wecome and valued, I hope to draw on those experiences to support the entire team from behind the scenes.
What’s a habit or ritual that keeps you grounded?
Before any important event - whether in my professional or personal life - I always make a point organize the space around me. When my desk and room are tidy, I feel the energy shift, which naturally helps me feel more centered. It even goes so far as to boosts my motivation to take certain action. On days when I feel down or find it hard to get going in the morning, I have a personal mantra I always say to myself: "Be determined to have a great day and you will." Telling myself this helps me take ownership of my day and stay positive.
About Chika
I have over 20 years of experience as a communications and administrative assistant in global organizations. In my previous role at the OECD Tokyo Centre, I supported public outreach as a communications assistant for an international organization. Prior to that, I worked at Dalhousie University, where I was responsible for project management and administrative duties in a research lab, supporting academic research. I began assisting with MPower projects in 2023 and officially joined the team in the winter of 2024.
